Comparative Spectrum of Sodium Azide Responsiveness in Plants

Seeds of plant species from three different and distantly related genera viz. Nigella sativa L. Plantago ovata F. and Trigonella foenum graceum L. were presoaked and then subjected to 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mM concentrations of sodium azide for 4, 6 and 8 hours. The experiment was carried out to find a specific concentration of mutagen which can produce significant effect on distantly related crops. Parameters used to screen biological effect of sodium azide were germination percentage, survivility, seedling height, number of branches, wet to dry weight ratio, 1000-seed weight and mutation frequency. In spite of phytotaxonomically distantly related plant systems most of the traits including mutation frequency showed significant variation at 4.5 mM of sodium azide. The findings have practical utilization as breeders working with random crops can utilize 4.5 mM concentration of sodium azide to bring out induced genetic diversities in the absence of prior reports/works.
